The Irish Tourist Association was a precursor of Bord Fáilte and, subsequently, Fáilte Ireland. It sponsored the survey of Limerick (as well as other counties) with a view to assessing its potential for tourism.

The Field Name Books of the County and City of Limerick is a collection of more than 1,700 pages of notes taken by surveyors during the first ordnance survey of County Limerick, c. 1840. They comprise a vast quantity of data on the geography, place names, antiquities and other miscellaneous information relating to Limerick.

Something that people always find fascinating is to see images of a place, contrasting how it looks today with how it looked at some time in the past. Here we present a gallery of such images, which were taken as part of The Gathering Ireland in 2013.

Séamus Ó Ceallaigh was one of the great chroniclers of the history of Gaelic Games. As well as pursuing his work as a writer, Mr. Ó Ceallaigh accumulated a massive collection of G.A.A.-related materials. He bequeathed this collection to Limerick City Library and the library has held the Ó Ceallaigh Collection since 1989.

The local studies collection includes fifty trades and street directories of Limerick City and County, published between the years 1769 and 1976.

Grand Juries were the forerunners of the modern County Councils. They were a panel of major landowners in each county formed to make decisions on legal and other matters. They were originally responsible only for the justice system, but this was gradually expanded to commissioning of local public works. It funded these works by means of a county tax on land, known as a cess or ‘rates’.

In October of 1840 a list of guilds members was submitted to the National Repeal Association’s meeting in the city.

We have compiled all notices of deaths contained in the Limerick Chronicle (and other local newspapers) from 1781 to 1951. The database consists of death notices, obituaries, funeral reports and news stories pertaining to the death of Limerick persons.
